A very insightful book which, along with God of Israel or God of All?, dealing with the Pentateuch, and Voices from Beyond, that treats of the Prophets, form a trilogy on the Old Testament. The contents distinguish carefully between ‘Wisdom’ which is as old as Israel itself, and ‘Wisdom literature‘ which arose in post-exilic Israel after 6 century BCE apart from showing how a good number of proverbs have their origin in oral tradition whereas others are literary creations of the wisdom teachers. Since the wisdom teachers do not base their arguments on divine authority but on life experience and personal observation, the book will appeal not only to students of the Bible but also to all people of good-will, interested in improving the quality of their life.
